10 Ways To Have Fun In The Mortgage Business

BATTLECALL GUEST EXPERT: Tom Domin, Mortgage Marketing Toolkit

We all know the mortgage business can be a little difficult at times. This is a perfect time to take a step back and remember why most of you got into this industry in the first place. When you embarked on this adventure of originating mortgages, were you hoping that it would provide you with the flexible schedule, great income potential and possible a little fun? Below are just a few tips on how to keep the business fun...

1. Relax: The mortgage business is not life-or-death surgery. We are in the people business, and we do the best possible job that we can. You'll find that most "problems" take care of themselves over time no matter what you do.

2. Look at problems as puzzles: Closing mortgages is not brain surgery...it's more like brain aerobics. You have the solution for every puzzle in the mortgage business. Your success is the measure of how well you solve the puzzles that come your way.

3. Compete only with yourself: Your personal best should set the standard for you. Challenge yourself and not others. When you work to improve your own score, everyone else is a potential friend rather than a competitor.

4. Become and stay productive: The mortgage business is not a sprint...instead; it's more of an endurance race. Find your best pace and stay with it, and the business will come. The very best way to have fun is to be doing enough business that you don't have time to feel bad about what you aren't doing.

5. Be Innovative: Make yourself genuinely distinctive. Put your personal stamp on everything you do, and you will achieve market recognition.

6. The mortgage business is a "contact" sport: Contacts lead to relationships which are the basis for success in your business. Make new contacts wherever you go. The more people who know the more business you will do and the more fun it is.

7. Hang out with positive people: Make the decision to focus your time on the positive people in your life and in your office. Hang out with the people who can laugh at themselves and not at others.

8. Make mortgages your lifestyle: The mortgage business is a life style that must include those you love the most. You'll be surprised at what can happen when you interest your significant others in your plans to attain success.

9. Retain your sense of humor: Consider this little refinance humor:

The phone rang...it was a Loan Officer from a local Mortgage Company doing a little telemarketing.
"Good evening Ma'am...Do you have a second mortgage on your home?"
"No I don't," replied the women.
"Would you like to consolidate your debts?"
"Actually...I really don't have any," she said.
"How about freeing up some cash for those needed home improvements?" he tried.
"I really don't need any...I just recently had lots of work and up-grades down on the house and I paid in cash."
There was a brief silence, and then the Loan Officer asked...Are you looking for a husband?"

10. If you're not having fun, you need to change how you do things: You're probably taking it too seriously.

Remember, the mortgage business is not brain surgery...it's only a brain exercise.
